The 5G network is starting to be discussed again by the public. The emergence of smartphones from various brands such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, Oppo, and Vivo that enter Indonesia and support 5G has made the 5G network more discussed in Indonesia. In addition, with the emergence of 5G commercialization in various countries in the world, people are asking when the 5G network will be available in Indonesia.

The government is currently preparing to develop a 5G network in Indonesia. Trials have been carried out since 2017 and have conducted frequency tenders for 5G networks to telecommunications operators. It is planned that the 5G network can begin to be used by the public in 2021 in several locations in Indonesia. There are 13 first locations that can enjoy the 5G network, namely:

  • 6 Provincial Capitals in Java Island (Jakarta, Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta),
  • 5 Super Priority Tourist Destinations (Labuan Bajo, Mandalika, Lake Toba, Likupang, and Borobudur),
  • Capital City (IKN), and
  • 1 Manufacturing Industry Area.

The implementation process in the 13 regions is targeted to be completed by 2024 and its reach will be expanded according to demand in other regions in Indonesia. Johnny G Plate as Minister of Communication and Information Technology said that several industrial estates and public areas with high traffic will be taken into consideration for the expansion of 5G networks in Indonesia. If the 5G roadmap goes well, Industrial Estates such as Karawang New Industry City (KNIC), Jababeka, Deltamas, and other Industrial Estates will have the opportunity to be reached by this 5G network.

5G technology is needed to meet the increasing demand for faster and more secure data communications. The 5G network is expected to provide high speeds with very low latency in its coverage area. With the presence of a 5G network in Indonesia, new opportunities and new business models are opening up. With these new opportunities, it is hoped that industry players can be more creative and be able to implement the network to increase company efficiency and productivity.

In addition, the existence of a 5G network in Indonesia has made a virtual reality, augmented reality, smart factories, smart Warehousing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) increasingly developed and used in Indonesia. With virtual reality and augmented reality, companies can conduct training, develop product prototypes, create virtual product displays that can reduce costs and production time. With smart factories and smart warehousing, it allows companies to automate company operations, control warehousing remotely, and create smarter supply chains that are supported by the use of the Internet of Things (IoT).
